Débarqué en Pennsylvanie au milieu du XVIIIè siècle, Jack Boehm, un immigrant allemand, s’installa dans le Kentucky en 1785. Il y fonda une distillerie en 1788, et sept ans plus tard commercialisa ses premiers fûts de whisky. En 1892, James Beauregard Beam, surnommé Jim Beam, prit la succession de son père à la tête de la distillerie. Fermée au moment de la Prohibition, Jim Beam et son fils Jeremiah relancèrent la production dès 1934. La société rebaptisée James B.Beam Distilling Company fut rachetée en 1967 par le groupe American Brands, Inc.
