The island of Arran was once known for its whisky, but passed a century and a half without a legal distillery. In 1995, the neat new distillery, with decorative pagodas, opened in Lochranza, a hamlet on the northern shore of the island. After the minimum period of maturation, Arran offered its first sampling in late 1998.
